Local schools learn the history behind Festa della Repubblica

ILC Supporting Italian in Queensland Schools Program - Local Brisbane Schools celebrated Festa della Repubblica Italian Republic Day in June 2026

In the first two weeks of June, the ILC team had the pleasure of taking part in Festa della Repubblica celebrations hosted by two local primary schools: St. Anthony’s and Holy Cross.

During their visits, ILC teachers shared with students the fascinating historical events that led Italy to adopt a new form of government. The young learners were very curious and asked many thoughtful questions, such as “Why didn’t Italians want the king anymore? What happened to the King? Why weren’t women allowed to vote before 1946?”.

Students were amazed to discover that Italy was a monarchy only 80 years ago. However, what truly captured their imagination were the videos of the Frecce Tricolori – Italy’s renowned Air Force aerobatic team. The children were fascinated by the spectacular aerial performances and the trails of green, white, and red smoke that mirror the colours of the Italian flag.

At St. Anthony’s, Prep and Year 1 students also learned about the origins of Tarantella, the traditional dance of Southern Italy. Their excitement grew when they discovered that a similar dance is called Pizzica – just like their teacher, Signora Pizzica! After hearing the story behind these traditional dances, the students enthusiastically learned some of the dance steps themselves.

At Holy Cross Primary, where the Italian program is run by the enthusiastic teacher Signora Artuso, the Festa della Repubblica celebrations reached another level. In addition to learning about the significance of this important national holiday, students had the opportunity to taste freshly handmade pasta prepared by Chef Mario, followed by a delicious gelato.

These memorable experiences provided students with a wonderful opportunity to explore Italian history, culture, traditions, and cuisine, making this year’s Festa della Repubblica celebrations both educational and enjoyable.
