Every October, Italian takes centre stage on the world’s greatest cultural platform. Here’s why it matters.
Each year during the third week of October, something remarkable happens across the globe – the Week of the Italian Language in the World (Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo) brings together communities, educators, cultural institutions and language lovers in a shared celebration of one of the world’s most beloved languages.
Now in its 26th edition, this annual event has grown into the most important global celebration dedicated to the Italian language – and 2026 is set to be its most inspiring yet.
A Global Event with Deep Roots
First established in 2001, the Week of the Italian Language in the World has been held under the High Patronage of the Presidency of the Republic every year since its inception – a testament to the cultural significance and national pride behind this initiative.
Organised by Italy’s diplomatic-consular network and Italian Cultural Institutes worldwide, the event brings together an impressive coalition of partners in language promotion, including the Accademia della Crusca, the Dante Alighieri Society, the Treccani Italian Encyclopaedia Institute, RAI Italia, the Government of the Swiss Confederation and many more leading institutions dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Italian language globally.
Each edition is brought to life through a rich program of conferences, exhibitions and meetings – all woven together by a single inspiring theme.
The Theme of #SLIM2026
“Brilliant Language: Imagining, Designing, Creating with Italian”
This year’s theme celebrates Italian as a brilliant language in every sense of the word – radiant, inventive and forward-looking, while deeply rooted in a long and rich history and tradition.
The theme invites us to explore how Italian continues to export the very best of its expertise to the world: from technology, science, and engineering to design, fashion, gastronomy, literature, art and history. It is a celebration of Italy’s extraordinary capacity to innovate and create – and of the language that carries that creativity across borders and generations.
It is a reminder that Italian is not simply a language of the past. It is a living, dynamic force that shapes how ideas are conceived, how beauty is designed and how culture is shared with the world.
How ILC is Celebrating
At the Italian Language Centre (ILC), the Week of the Italian Language in the World is a highlight of our calendar. It is a moment to reflect on why we do what we do – and to celebrate the incredible community of students, families, teachers and language lovers who make Italian thrive right here in Queensland.
Stay tuned for more details on how we’ll be marking #SLIM2026 this October. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
