Italian Movie and Pizza Night is one of ILC Brisbane’s most loved end-of-semester traditions – an evening that brings everyone together to enjoy two quintessentially Italian experiences: cinema and food. It’s warm, relaxed, and full of the kind of shared moments that make language learning feel like community, not just class.
The Perfect Pairing: Food and Film
In Italian culture, food and movies naturally belong together because both are meant to be shared. A meal is rarely just about eating – it’s about conversation, laughter, and the simple pleasure of being at the table with others, just as a film is best experienced when you can react, reflect, and talk about it together.
Cinema is also a powerful way to promote and illustrate Italian culture, habits, and traditions, offering a window into everyday life as well as big emotions and unforgettable stories. Italian films often capture the country’s way of living – from family gatherings around the dinner table to the rituals and customs that shape Italian identity and make it so distinctive.
From COVID Adaptation to Beloved Tradition
Italian Movie and Pizza Night began in September 2020, during a time when connection felt more important – and more complicated – than ever.
It was originally conceived as an in-person meeting that could still work within COVID-19 restrictions, offering students a chance to come together safely while keeping the spirit of Italian culture alive. The venue was a cinema in New Farm, specifically chosen so participants could maintain safe distances from each other during the pandemic.
Like so many initiatives of that period, it required flexibility, careful planning, and a willingness to adapt – yet it also proved how resilient a community can be, even in challenging circumstances.
A New Chapter: Community and Connection
After COVID ended, the initiative didn’t fade away – it grew into something even more meaningful. Italian Movie and Pizza Night evolved into a true end-of-semester celebration, with the venue moved to ILC itself so the whole community could gather in a familiar, welcoming space.
The most significant addition was pizza, which turned the event into more than a screening and made it a genuinely Italian-style social occasion. Food plays a crucial role in connecting people, and sharing a meal creates an authentic opportunity to chat, laugh, and build friendships across classes and levels. In many ways, that simple act of eating together captures the Italian spirit of community and conviviality at its best.
Today, Italian Movie and Pizza Night has become a cherished fixture in the student calendar at ILC Brisbane: the joy of cinema, and the warmth of sharing food with others. It’s a celebration of language, friendship, and the traditions that bring people closer – and it’s an event we can’t wait to enjoy again in the semesters to come.
