October marked the 25th anniversary of Italian Language Week worldwide, celebrating the beauty and influence of the Italian language and we were delighted to join the festivities with a series of cultural events.
The celebrations began in late September with a lecture by Professor De Rosa from the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, who guided attendees on a virtual journey through Italy, described as an ‘open-air museum’.
On October 10, the highlight event Italian…That’s Amore’ embraced the 2025 theme, Italofonia: lingua oltre i confini (Italophony: Language Beyond Borders).
The presentation explored Italian’s global presence and its evolution in Australia – from the early `Australo-Italian’ spoken by migrants to today’s widespread use of Italian words, like cappuccino, gelato and lasagne, in English speaking contexts.
It was also noted that the rise of a new hybrid language among young Italians on Working Holiday Visas, reflecting the ongoing vitality of Italian abroad.
The evening concluded with an Italian-style aperitif and a welcome speech by the Consul of Italy, Luna Angelini Marinucci, who highlighted the importance of promoting Italian as a language of culture and connection.
The event was a heartfelt celebration of Italian language, heritage, and love-truly, That’s Amore.
