Celebrating April 25 – a day of freedom and remembrance
April 25 holds deep meaning for both Italy and Australia, marking two distinct yet equally powerful moments of national reflection.
In Italy, Festa della Liberazione (Liberation Day) commemorates the end of Nazi occupation and Fascist rule in 1945. After years of dictatorship and the devastation of World War II, Italy was divided between the Allied-controlled south and the Nazi-occupied north. The German forces, supported by the remnants of Mussolini’s regime, imposed harsh control, deportations, and reprisals against civilians. The Italian Resistance – made up of partisans, workers, and ordinary citizens, fought bravely to liberate towns and cities, culminating in the nationwide uprising of April 25, 1945. This day marked the beginning of Italy’s rebirth as a free and democratic nation.
The liberation paved the way for a new chapter in Italian history. In 1946, Italians were called to vote in a historic referendum to choose between monarchy and republic. For the first time, women also took part in a national election. The result – the birth of the Italian Republic, symbolised the country’s definitive break from dictatorship and its commitment to democratic values. As Italy approaches the 80th anniversary of the Republic on June 2, 2026, this milestone invites reflection on eight decades of democracy, progress, and unity built on the foundations of freedom.
Across Italy, parades, concerts, and civic ceremonies fill the streets with the tricolore flag, reminding all generations of the enduring value of liberty and the sacrifices made to achieve it.
On the same date, Australia and New Zealand observe Anzac Day, remembering the soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who landed at Gallipoli in 1915. It is a solemn day of remembrance for all who served and sacrificed in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
Though born from different histories, both commemorations share a common spirit – the resilience of people in the face of adversity and the collective commitment to peace and freedom.
April 25 stands as a bridge between nations, reminding the world that remembrance and gratitude transcend borders.
