This week, the Year 8 students of Meridan College were transported to the lively streets of Venice during their two-hour immersion experience themed Carnevale di Venezia e la Commedia dell’Arte. It was an unforgettable session filled with laughter, learning, and a touch of theatrical magic!
From the moment the session began, students were immersed in the historical significance of the Carnival of Venice, discovering how this extravagant festival dates back centuries and has remained one of Italy’s most iconic celebrations. They also explored the world of La Commedia dell’Arte, a fascinating theatrical tradition known for its masked characters and improvised performances.
To bring the spirit of Carnevale to life, students engaged in fun, collaborative games designed to enhance their Italian language skills. They practiced descriptive adjectives and learned exciting new vocabulary related to the Carnival season, all while working together in an energetic and interactive environment.
A highlight of the experience was the chance to try on traditional Venetian masks, each representing different personalities and emotions. This hands-on activity allowed students to step into the roles of the famous characters from La Commedia dell’Arte—from the mischievous Arlecchino to the clever Colombina and the boastful Capitano. Through a lighthearted role-play, they brought these characters to life, embracing the humor and exaggerated expressions that define this theatrical style.
Laughter filled the room as students embodied their characters, experimenting with different gestures, voices, and comedic interactions. The energy was contagious, making for an engaging and memorable experience that combined history, language, and creativity in the most entertaining way possible.
The Carnevale di Venezia e la Commedia dell’Arte immersion was truly a fantastic opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of Italian culture while having an absolute blast. It was an experience they won’t soon forget—one filled with fun, learning, and a whole lot of mask-wearing mischief!
