If you love Italian or you’re just starting to learn it – Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo (SLIM) is the week to mark on your calendar.
Established in 2001, it’s widely considered the most important international event dedicated to promoting the Italian language worldwide. Every October, it invites communities everywhere to discover how Italian lives not only in classrooms but also in culture, creativity and everyday life.
A Brief History
SLIM was born from an agreement between the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI – Ministero Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale) and the Accademia della Crusca, with the Swiss Confederation joining later.
It takes place annually in the third week of October, under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, bringing together institutions and audiences around a shared goal: keeping Italian visible, vibrant and relevant worldwide.
Why We Celebrate
The Week of Italian Language in the World is an occasion to valorise Italian linguistic heritage abroad, support the network of Italian Cultural Institutes and schools offering Italian courses, and promote Italy’s image through language as a vehicle for culture, creativity and innovation.
A Truly Global Event
SLIM has grown into a genuinely worldwide celebration, with hundreds of initiatives across all continents – from conferences and exhibitions to concerts, film screenings, and culinary events. Key partners include Società Dante Alighieri, Treccani, and Rai Italia.
You’ll find events in Australia (through universities and cultural associations), across Latin America (where Italian heritage communities are especially active), throughout Eastern Europe (with strong academic participation), and in the United States (via Cultural Institutes and local Italian organizations).
Italian: The Language of Arts, Music, Food, and Culture
Italian is more than a means of communication – it’s a gateway to understanding some of humanity’s greatest cultural achievements.
It’s the language of opera, with terms like soprano, allegro and crescendo used universally. It shapes the culinary world, with words like pasta, espresso, al dente and bruschetta adopted into virtually every language.
In art and architecture, Italian sits at the centre as the language of Renaissance masters – Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio. Even global art vocabulary carries Italian fingerprints: fresco, chiaroscuro, piazza, palazzo.
And beyond the classics, Italian carries centuries of literary tradition – from Dante to Calvino – while enriching how we experience Italian cinema, fashion, design and contemporary culture.
The 2026 Edition
This year’s XXVI edition (October 19 – 25, 2026) explores
“Lingua geniale: ideare, progettare, creare con l’italiano”
Ingenious Language: Ideating, Designing, Creating with Italian
The theme highlights Italian as a powerful tool for innovation and creative thinking – a language that helps shape Italian excellence in technology, engineering, design, fashion, gastronomy, art and science.
Recent themes have explored sustainability (2023), books as cultural transmission (2024) and Italian as a global social space (2025).
Each year, SLIM reminds us that Italian is a living language – one that continues to generate contemporary visions while remaining rooted in rich heritage.
Join the Celebration
Wherever you are in the world, SLIM is an invitation to listen, speak, read, imagine and create in Italian.
We will join the celebration with an activity, honouring the strong connection between Italian language, culture and Australian multiculturalism.
Details of the activity will be shared in due course on our SLIM page. Stay tuned!
A presto!
